Nikolay Zlochevskyi and Prince Albert II of Monaco Hold Second International Forum on European Energy Security in Monte Carlo

The Forum was co-organized by Burisma Group and Adam Smith Conferences, and with support from the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the Aleksander Kwasniewski Foundation Amicus Europae.

The second annual Forum on Energy Security for the Future: A New Vision, Strategy, Innovation was held on June 2, 2017, in Monte Carlo, Monaco. The Forum offered the largest discussion platform in Europe to address energy security issues and the need for new environmental standards. It brought together over 200 guests, including European politicians, opinion leaders, security experts, journalists and international energy companies that provide innovative technology and transform the energy sector worldwide.


The second International Forum addressed energy security with focus on Ukraine’s increasing role in the European energy market. The event was attended by His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco, the President of Poland (1995-2005) Aleksander Kwasniewski, the President of Slovenia (2007–2012) Danilo Türk, the Prime Minister of Belgium (1999–2008) and the Leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Guy Verhofstadt, the European Commissioner for Energy (2004 and 2009) Andris Piebalgs, the Director of the CIA’s Counterterrorist Center (1999-2002) and Ambassador at Large for Counter-Terrorism (2002-2004) Joseph Cofer Black, the Director of the Atlantic Council Dina Patriciu Eurasia Center and the US Ambassador to Ukraine (2003-2006) John E. Herbst and other high-profile guests.


In attendance from the Ukrainian side were the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Kistion, the Head of the Committee on Taxation and Customs Policy at the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Nina Yuzhanina, Deputy Minister for International Integration at the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine Nataliya Boyko, as well as representatives of the Embassy of Ukraine in France, the Cabinet of Ministers, Ministries and Departments.


The Forum started with welcoming remarks from His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco. “Today we are at a crossroads. We need to abandon our current energy model and construct a new one before it is too late. Designing a new model today means moving away from the carbon economy. It is a matter of choosing energy transition and renewable energies. This transition has already begun. This is what we’ve been doing in Monaco for a several years now, through a global policy aimed at promoting renewable energies and it is very important that we find private companies like Burisma that share our views”.


The Forum participants outlined the increasing role of Ukraine for European energy security strategy and welcomed to Monaco leading Ukrainian politicians and energy officials. The Forum on Energy Security for the Future: New Vision, Strategy, Innovation for the second year in a row offers global leaders an exclusive platform to shape European energy security strategy. Thanks to the new state energy strategy and important steps taken to reform domestic energy sector and join European community, the role of Ukraine is continuously growing. Discussions also focused on positive changes in Ukraine’s fiscal policy and new instruments required to boost oil & gas production.


“The processes taking place in the EU automatically affect Ukraine and vice versa. Such events allow Ukrainian and European leaders share their views and define instruments required to obtain energy independence at a country level and in the whole Europe”, noted the President of Burisma Group Nikolay Zlochevskyi.
